Mitt Romney Comes Out Hard Against Auto Industry Bailout

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is standing steadfastly behind the forces opposing a $25 billion "bridge loan" for struggling Detroit auto manufacturers. Speaking Thursday morning amid growing signs of gridlock in Congress, Romney said "there's no question but that if you just write a check, you're going to see these companies go out of business ultimately."

Detroit Automakers' Rescue Hopes Stall in Senate

A plan to give troubled U.S. automakers billions of dollars in government-backed loans is on life support, leaving the fate of hundreds of thousands of workers and Detroit's once-venerable car companies hanging in the balance. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., canceled plans Wednesday for a vote on a bill to carve $25 billion in new auto industry loans.

Democratic officials say that Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano is a leading contender for the job of secretary of homeland security in President-elect Barack Obama's administration. These officials caution that no final decision has been made on the job involving the massive department created by the Congress in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.
