Alabama expands religious freedom on death row

VERBATIM: The state says it will now let a condemned prisoner’s pastor hold his hand during a lethal injection next month, a decision that was made to end litigation over the issue. Inmate Willie Smith’s request to have his personal clergyman with him as he is put to death turned into a lawsuit prompting the change in Alabama’s execution procedures. Smith was convicted of the 1991 kidnapping and murder of 22-year-old Sharma Ruth Johnson in Birmingham. Michael Harrington, SRN News.
