Biden opposes law that excludes Puerto Rico benefits

President Biden opposes a law that excludes Puerto Rico from a federal benefits program. Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, benefits are not available to U-S citizens living in the territories of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam. The president opposes that exclusion, but says in a statement that his administration will defend it at the Supreme Court. He says the Justice Department “has a longstanding policy of defending the constitutionality of federal statutes, regardless of policy preferences.” Former President Trump also opposed the law pertaining to Puerto Rico.
