NIH Director Francis Collins to step down by year’s end

The director of the National Institutes of Health is stepping down by the end of the year. Dr. Francis Collins has worked at NIH for three decades, serving as director for the past 12 years. He wrote on Twitter “it’s been a privilege & honor to serve,” but he believes “no person should hold this position for too long.” President Biden issued a statement hailing Collins as “one of the most important scientists of our time.” In 2007, President George W. Bush awarded Collins, who is an outspoken Christian, the Presidential Medal of Freedom for overseeing the international project to map the human genome.
