White House asks Congress for billions in emergency funding

The White House is asking Congress for billions in emergency funding for disaster aid and the resettlement of Afghans. President Biden is seeking at least 24-billion dollars in new money to deal with natural disasters, including Hurricane Ida, and more than 6-billion dollars for the Afghan evacuation and refugee resettlement. The White House request comes less than a month before the end of the government’s fiscal year, and as lawmakers are debating the president’s massive tax-and-spend proposals.
