White House defends Emanuel pick to be ambassador to Japan

The White House is defending President Biden’s nominee for ambassador to Japan. Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel heads into his Senate confirmation hearing amid several complaints from liberal Democrats and activists. They’re unhappy with his handling of a fatal police shooting of a Black teen in Chicago seven years ago. The White House isn’t backing down. A spokeswoman says the president nominated Emanuel because of his public service record in Congress, as a White House official in the Clinton and Obama administrations, and as mayor of Chicago.
