WHO unveils new system for naming coronavirus variants

The World Health Organization has unveiled a new system for naming coronavirus variants. Letters of the Greek alphabet are now being used for coronavirus variants, instead of alphanumeric numbers such as B.1.351. The W-H-O hopes the move will simplify discussion and pronunciation while avoiding stigma. Since the pandemic began, the names people have used to describe the virus have provoked controversy. The W-H-O has said people should avoid using country names in association with emerging variants.
