Man kills self following hours-long standoff with police

MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Police say a man who opened fire on officers trying to serve and arrest warrant has killed himself following a standoff of several hours.

Middleborough Police Chief Joseph Perkins says the man “appears to have killed himself,” and has not provided further details.

Perkins said earlier that no one was struck when the suspect opened fire with a rifle at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, and that officers did not return fire.

Police pulled back, took cover and established a perimeter around the house as the man barricaded himself inside. They tried unsuccessfully to establish contact with the man.

The regional SWAT team was called to the scene.

The suspect is described to be a white man in his late 30s or early 40s
