Shooter contained in Dearborn, Michigan hotel, one hurt; police negotiating

(Reuters) -A shooter armed with a rifle opened fire inside a hotel in Dearborn, Michigan on Thursday, injuring at least one person, and police said they contained the suspect inside the building and were negotiating.

The incident unfolded on Thursday afternoon at a Hampton Inn in downtown Dearborn, outside Detroit, Dearborn Police spokesman Dan Bartok said. Police began evacuating patrons and employees of the hotel after arriving at the scene, he added.

“The suspect is still inside the hotel. We have the suspect contained, and we’re actively negotiating with the suspect at this point,” Bartok told reporters, urging people to stay away from the area.

Bartok said one person had been transported to a local hospital for treatment, without providing details. He described the hotel as “secured”, but did not specify if that meant the building was completely evacuated.

Bartok did not provide any information on the suspect, and said the person’s motive was unclear.
