U.N. pressures Dominican Republic on abortion.

The U.N. Human Rights Committee is pressuring the Dominican Republic to embrace abortion. The panel is calling on the Latin American country to drop criminal penalties for abortion and to legalize the practice in cases where the life or health of the mother is deemed to be at risk. The Dominican Republic is one of the few nations that still outlaw abortion and observers do not believe its leaders will submit to the U.N.’s demands. For decades the Human Rights Committee has campaigned to expand abortion access all around the globe. Sometimes threats of funding cuts accompany U.N. demands.
