U.S. candidate beats Russia to head U.N. telecoms agency

GENEVA (Reuters) – The U.S. candidate Doreen Bogdan-Martin on Thursday beat a Russian candidate to be the next Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union.

The contest between U.S. candidate Doreen Bogdan-Martin and Russia’s Rashid Ismailov to head the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is seen as a test of Western efforts to isolate Russia diplomatically at the U.N. more than seven months after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

“I’ve worked for this moment for more than three decades,” Bogdan-Martin said in a victory speech where she pledged unity and to work to improve digital connectivity.
